Project Title: 
Modeling Crustal Flow at Tectonic Boundaries

These researchers are conducting 2D thermo-mechanical modeling of the geodynamic processes that occur during the flow of continental crust. The main focus of the research is an investigation of deep-crust lateral flow and ascent (trajectories, rates, durations, thermal/mechanical consequences) under conditions of extension, both with and without surface processes (sediment deposited in extensional basins). The researchers are using Underworld 1 and its most recent update, Underworld 2, a 3D-parallel geodynamic modeling framework that derives viscous/viscoplastic thermal, chemical, and thermochemical models for lithospheric deformation over geologic times scales (millions of years).
