Project Title: 
A Medicago truncatula Hapmap as a Platform for Exploring the Genetics of Symbiosis

This project uses whole-genome association mapping to create a Medicago HapMap for genes and gene-systems that play a role in the contemporary evolution of symbiosis. Approximately 300 diverse Medicago lines have been resequenced using next generation sequencing technology and 25 Medicago lines have been sequenced and assembled de novo to discover single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), gene copy number variation, and insertion/deletion polymorphisms among Medicago germplasm. This massive database of SNPs and structural variants enables the discovery of segments with shared ancestry (haplotypes) as well as complex clusters of related genes, which can then be used for data-mining and large-scale discovery and mapping of genes underlying symbiosis.
