MSI PIs Receive 2023 Research Infrastructure Investment Program Awards

Six MSI PIs have received awards from the 2023 Research Infrastructure Investment Program. This Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) program is designed to facilitate interdisciplinary partnerships and strengthen the University’s research infrastructure. OVPR made 19 awards this year.

Below are the MSI PIs who received awards:

  • Courtney Aldrich; Medicinal Chemistry
    • Project Title: Equipment Request for an Isothermal Titration Calorimeter
    • Professor Aldrich uses software available through MSI for numerous projects aimed at developing new antibacterial agents, with a focus on Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • David Bernlohr; Head, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics
    • Project Title: Purchase of an Aquilos 2 Focused Beam Transmission Electron Microscope for Tomographic Applications
    • Professor Bernlohr uses MSI for two areas of research: study of the metabolic relationships between obesity and insulin action, and examination of antioxidant defense systems operable in adipose tissue and their regulation by pro-inflammatory cytokines.
  • Steven Koester; Electrical and Computer Engineering
    • Project Title: Restoring Leadership in Nanopatterning at the Minnesota Nano Center
    • Professor Koester is using MSI for two projects: determining the properties of contacts to 2D materials and simulating cryogenic operation of MOSFETs for ultra-low-power memory and logic devices.
  • Louis Mansky; Diagnostic and Biological Sciences
    • Project Title: Advancing Research Infrastructure Core in the School of Dentistry
    • Professor Mansky uses MSI resources to study HIC reverse transcriptase-mediated mutagenesis and to investigate questions related to HTLV-1 particle size, Gag stoichiometry in particles, and HTLV-1 Gag interactions in living cells using multiple approaches.
  • Laura Niedernhofer; Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics
    • Project Title: Re-Engineering Current LIMS Infrastructure to Support Biomedical Research
    • Professor Niedernhofer uses MSI for a project to map senescent cells in human and mouse tissues to create a 4D atlas.
  • Erik Shook; Geography, Environment, and Society
    • Project Title: Building a Spatial Maker Space in the GeoCommons
    • Professor Shook uses MSI for projects in scalable geospatial computing, including using climate, agricultural, and geospatial data to discover patterns and anomalies to improve understanding, and to improve scalability and performance of codes.
