MSI PI Marla Spivak (professor, Entomology), an internationally known expert on bees, appeared recently on PBS’s Newshour program in a segment about the decline of bee populations and possible technological solutions to that problem. Professor Spivak is among the bee experts interviewed during the segment.
The Large Lakes Observatory at UM Duluth has had a huge mooring in Lake Superior for the past couple of months. The structure, nearly 1,000 feet wide and 500 feet tall, was designed to collect data about the convection cycle in the lake. The research team removed the structure earlier this month.
MSI PI Laura Gagliardi (professor, Chemistry) has been elected to the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science, an international society for scientists working in fields related to quantum theory, including chemistry and chemical physics. Members are elected based on their outstanding research and leadership.
MSI PI Dominik Schillinger (assistant professor, Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering) has received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). This award goes to outstanding scientists and engineers who are beginning their independent research careers. They are made through participating government departments and agencies.
MSI PIs Rendong Yang (assistant professor, Hormel Institute) and Scott Dehm (associate professor, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology; Masonic Cancer Center) have received a Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program Idea Development Award to support research into genetic markers that might show how prostate cancer could progress.
On Wednesday, July 3, 2019, MSI staff will perform scheduled maintenance and upgrades to various MSI systems. Primary Storage, Mesabi, and Itasca will be unavailable throughout much of the day. A global system reservation will start at 5:00 a.m. on July 3. Jobs that cannot be completed before 5:00 a.m. on July 3 will be held until after maintenance and then started once the system returns to production status. July maintenance will include:
