Dr. Jim Wilgenbusch, the Director of Research Computing at the University of Minnesota, will serve as the Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC) for 2021-22. CASC comprises more than 90 research computing-focused organizations from academic institutions, national labs, and research centers around the U.S.
MSI PIs John Bischof (professor, Mechanical Engineering; Director, Institute for Engineering in Medicine) and Erik Finger (associate professor, Surgery) will lead the newly established Organ and Tissue Preservation Center at the University of Minnesota.
MSI PIs Chris Wendt (professor, Medicine) and Mark Klein (associate professor, Medicine) are co-leaders, along with a researcher from the Omaha VA Medical Center, of a new grant from the Veterans Health Administration. The $4.5 million grant forms the Upper Midwest VA Lung Cancer Screening and Research Network, which will expand lung cancer screenings and research among veterans.

MnDRIVE, the partnership between the University of Minnesota and the State of Minnesota to address the grand challenges, is seeking to find alternatives to existing plastics, in order to fight the increasingly serious problem of plastic waste. MSI PIs Brent Barney (associate professor, Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering) and Paul Dauenhauer (professor, Chemical Engineering and Materials Sciences) are involved in this research.
The University of Minnesota recently announced new Distinguished McKnight University Professors. Two MSI PIs are included in the 2021 class. The Distinguished McKnight University Professorship program recognizes outstanding faculty members who have recently achieved full professor status. On Wednesday, April 7, 2021, MSI staff will perform scheduled maintenance and upgrades to various MSI systems. Primary Storage, Mesabi, and Mangi will be unavailable throughout much of the day. A global system reservation will start at 5:00 a.m. on April 7. Jobs that cannot be completed before 5:00 a.m. on April 7 will be held until after maintenance and then started once the system returns to production status. April maintenance will include:
Agate, the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute’s newest supercomputer, is a Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) cluster. Delivery is expected to begin in August 2021, with the cluster available to Minnesota researchers in the fall.
Near the beginning of the shutdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Minnesota began to plan for safe return to classrooms. An HVAC working group led by Facilities Management has been working to improve heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in classrooms and other group spaces to fight the spread of SARS-CoV-2.
