Mesabi to Retire June 5, 2024

After almost 10 years of service, the Mesabi HPC system will be retired on June 5th, 2024, to make room for the expansion of the Agate cluster. Mesabi is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain. This transition is part of our ongoing commitment to advance the research capabilities at the University of Minnesota and ensure our infrastructure aligns with the evolving needs of our community.

Important facts about this transition

  • There will be no impact to home directory storage: We understand the importance of your data and wish to assure you that this transition will have no impact on the storage in your home and project directories. All data stored in your home and project directories will remain accessible and unchanged by the retirement of the Mesabi cluster.
  • The Agate computing cluster will be expanded: The retirement of Mesabi paves the way for a substantial expansion of the Agate computing cluster. This move is part of our strategic focus on enhancing computational resources available to our research community. The expanded Agate cluster, set to be operational in the Fall of 2024, will offer increased capacity, advanced features, and enhanced performance to better serve your research needs. We are working with a faculty advisory group to ensure that the expansion of Agate meets the broad needs of our research and scholarly communities and will share more about what capacity and capabilities the expansion will bring when we know more.
  • MSI will provide support to users during the transition: Recognizing the significance of this change, we are committed to supporting you during this transition. In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out detailed transition guides, hosting informational webinars, and providing one-on-one consultations to ensure a seamless migration of your projects. Please watch for emails in January that will outline the technical details of the transition.

Your feedback is crucial as we navigate this transition. We invite you to share your thoughts, concerns, or queries with our User Support team. Our team is here to help and ensure that the evolution of our infrastructure serves you optimally.
