Pink Snow

MSI PI Trinity Hamilton (associate professor, Plant and Microbial Biology) was interviewed recently on Minnesota Public Radio’s (MPR) Climate Cast program about her research into red-pigmented algae that live on snow. These algae affect the dynamics of snowmelt. The program, hosted by meteorologist Paul Huttner, can be found on the MPR website: The effects of “pink snow” and “glacier blood” on our climate.

This research received a UMII Seed Grant in 2021 and was featured on the MSI website: Bioinformatics Research of Algal Blooms in Ice.

Professor Hamilton uses MSI for several projects involving the functions and interactions of microorganisms in natural and engineered systems and how microbial communities respond and adapt to environmental change.
