Modeling of Large Lake Dynamics and Thermodynamics

Lake Superior and other large lakes around the world have sufficiently complex behavior, both dynamically and thermodynamically, that numerical modeling of physical processes is a necessary component of a comprehensive research program. Right now this group is focusing on two primary questions: First, as part of an EPA-funded project, they are improving their modeling capability of the Lake Superior/Duluth Harbor/St. Louis Estuary system, with the intent of developing a better understanding of interactions in this system. This will consist of improving the meteorological forcing used to drive the model, as well as adding nowcast capability to the model. A second project will focus on the sensitivity of Lake Malawi, a large lake in East Africa, to significant climatic shifts, to address the response of the lake following a large volcanic eruption (Toba) roughly 70,000 years ago. The researchers are planning on using open-source numerical modeling resources and available meteorological data to address both issues.
