Biomedical Functional Imaging and Neuroengineering
These researchers have a variety of projects focusing on functional imaging of biological systems, as a variety of other topics in neuroengineering. One set of issues they are currently examining is how the brain is affected by several noninvasive forms of neuromodulation. Using finite-element models with realistic head models, they can predict the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in silico. They are also exploring new work modeling the penetration of ultrasound in biological tissues. The researchers primarily use MSI resources for these complex computational models, which require significant CPU and memory resources and licensed commercial software like COMSOL and ANSYS. Other projects include high-resolution spatio-temporal bioelectromagnetic source imaging and bio-dielectric properties imaging, both of which have promising potential applications in disease prediction. The computational resources provided by MSI are invaluable in this research.
