Mechanistic Study of Hexadehydro Diels-Alder Reaction
The Hoye group is working on the mechanism of the hexadehydro-Diels–Alder (HDDA) reaction. Their experimental and initial computational results were first published in Nature in 2012. While the project is highly experimental, computational studies have led the researchers to a better understanding of the basic reactivity aspects of this new benzyne chemistry. For example, they recently discovered that the HDDA-generated benzyne could abstract two unactivated hydrogen atoms from the same molecule (e.g., from cyclooctane) to give reduced benzenoid products with concomitant formation of cyclooctene. To account for this unique transformation, they were able to locate a concerted transition state with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These interesting and fundamentally new results were, again, published in Nature this year.
