Numerical Studies of Particles and Fluids in Astrophysics

These researchers are continuing their unique and highly successful study of the dynamics of diffuse, ionized gases (plasmas) in astrophysical environments. Current research focuses on three linked efforts:

  • Ultra-high resolution cosmology simulations designed to understand basic physical processes in the diffuse media in galaxy clusters that constitute most of the ordinary matter in clusters
  • Exceptionally high resolution magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the interactions between energetic outflows from massive black holes and dynamnically active flows in surrounding media, which represents a potentially valuable diagnostic of galaxy cluster formation processes.
  • Continued development of the group's uniquely high performance MHD code, "WOMBAT," so that they can address questions like the two above with even better fidelity.


Each of these projects provides the base material for a student Ph.D. thesis.
