Ecology and Evolutionary Biology of Soil and Plant-Associated Microbial Communities
This work focuses on characterizing the composition, diversity, and function of plant-associated microorganisms. The group uses metagenomics for studying rhizosphere, foliar, and endophytic microbes associated with native prairie and crop plant species. They hope to identify factors that are most significant to determining microbial community composition and function, and the implications of microbial community variation for plant fitness. They are also comparing strategies for active management of plant-associated microbial communities to enhance plant productivity in agricultural systems. MSI resources and user support staff have been invaluable resources in processing large datasets of microbial DNA sequences and in the evaluation of the use of diverse methods for processing datasets.
