Virus Aerosol Sampler
These researchers are designing and building an aerosol sampler to be used on board commercial aircraft to determine whether anyone on board is releasing infectious disease particles. The application is primarily for international flights where disease transmission is of great concern, especially recently with the Ebola outbreak. The sampler concentrates airborne particles between about 1 and 5 microns in diameter that are the most likely to contain infectious virus. The particles are then collected either on a filter or in a liquid medium designed to maintain their infectivity prior to analysis. MSI resources are used to simulate air flows and particle transport within the sampler/collector to assist the design of our experimental prototype now under construction.
