Center for Filtration Research and Particle Technology Laboratory

The Particle Technology Laboratory is well-known for its instrumentation development activities. Instruments for particle generation, measurement, sampling and analysis in the 0.002 to 100 μm diameter range; and microscopes, electron microbalances, gas analyzers, anemometry are all available in the laboratory. Recent developments include a Nanometer Differential Mobility Analyzer for size distribution measurements in the 3 nm to 100 nm diameter range, an Electrospray Aerosol Generator for producing monodisperse nanoparticles larger than 2 nm and carbon nanotubes, a Nanoparticle Surface Area Monitor (NSAM) for measuring the nanoparticle surface area deposited in the human lung, a Universal NanoParticle Analyzer (UNPA) for measuring nanoparticle agglomerates, and aerosol generators for producing silver, silica and titanium dioxide nanoparticle agglomerates. Many of these nanoparticle instruments will be used for this research project.

The Center for Filtration Research (CFR) consists of 18 international leading filter manufacturers. The CFR performs numerical modeling and develops test methods to study air and water filtraton to mitigate airborne and liquid-borne pollutants. CFR supports eight PhD students and three post-docs to perform the filtration research. The researchers use the supercomputers for simulations that run on 128 cores for 24 hours at a time.
