Visualization and Characterization of Three-Dimensional Bulk Structure of Porous Materials and Their Relationship to Transport Properties

This research is an attempt to visualize and characterize the three-dimensional bulk structure of paper and board using non-intrusive techniques. The researchers have been working on developing a method using X-ray computed tomography where sub-micron resolutions are now feasible. The overall goal this work using MSI resources is to develop methods to visualize and characterize the 3D pore structure of materials; develop computational tools to predict the transport properties of porous materials using techniques such as molecular random walk simulations and lattice-Boltzman simulations; and to develop tools to predict the elastic and viscoelastic material properties using finite element analysis.
