Using High Performance Computing to Examine Fluid Flow and Chemistry in Geologic Systems
This project uses MSI HPC resources to run fully coupled, multi-phase, multi-component, non-isothermal simulations to examine fluid flow and chemistry in a variety of geologic systems. One of our main focuses is geologic Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), which is a promising technology for mitigating the detrimental effects of global climate change by creating carbon-negative electricity. Another of our main focuses is fluid flow in low-permeability igneous rocks, which could potentially sustain life in extreme environments. MSI resources are utilized to run massively parallel simulations in both of these research themes using the simulators TOUGH2, PFLOTRAN, and LBHydra.
