Large Scale Particle Simulation of Hypersonic Flows
This group’s research involves using the direct simulation Monte Carlo particle method in combination with advanced reactive molecular dynamics methods to simulate complex gas flows at a new level of physical refinement through large-scale computation. The researchers have developed an MPI-parallel DSMC code capable of simulating high-speed flow over 3D complex geometry utilizing billions of simulated molecules. This capability enables them to study actual NASA and Air Force flight vehicles and also enables them to develop new molecular-based physical models for high temperature reacting gas flows.
