Puccinia graminis Genome
Wheat stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici, is one of the most devastating pathogens of wheat. A new highly virulent race of this fungus, TTKSK (Ug99), was recently discovered in Northeast Africa and threatens world wheat production. Genome-wide SNP analysis is being used to characterized the global population structure of this pathogen in order to develop rapid molecular diagnostics methods. In addition, genomic and genetic tools are being used to identify effector genes involved in the pathogenicity and triggering host resistance.
