Genomic Comparisons of 188 Rhizobial Genomes
This group has recently assembled 188 nitrogen-fixing rhizobial genomes de novo from Illumina reads and four from PacBio sequencing technology to better understand the genomic variation within the species of Sinorhizobium meliloti and S. medicae and related genomes. They are analyzing single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and structural variation, including duplications, deletions, insertions, inversions, and translocations. Because these are all de novo genomes, the researchers will work towards understanding variation methodologies from a multiple reference quality genome viewpoint. These analyses will require whole-genome comparisons between many of these lines, especially between Illumina and PacBio assemblies, and again towards the published references. Motif mining will also be done to identify patterns occurring with certain recurring variations, and InterProScan will be run to identify both highly conserved and variant domains and motifs. Additionally, these resources will be used in conjunction with another lab to associate these variations with phenotypic changes that will be assayed.
