Running Blast2GO on a MSI computer with the Blast2GO graphical interface

Log in to a MSI Windows server or connect to MSI using NX. Then start up Blast2GO from http://www.blast2go.com/b2ghome

From the File menu select "DataAccess Settings" and set the fields to these values:

  • DB Name: b2gdb
  • DB Host: tern1.msi.umn.edu
  • DB User:blast2go
  • DB Password: blast4it

Click OK, and a window should pop up saying the new configuration was successful.

Running Blast2GO on a non-MSI computer with the Blast2GO graphical interface

MSI hosts a local copy of the Blast2GO database, allowing users to run the Blast2GO application on a computer connected to the University network and configure it to use the MSI database.

The MSI database is not directly accessible outside of the MSI network, so the first step is to set up an ssh tunnel to the database server. Every time you want to run Blast2GO , create an ssh tunnel using this command:

ssh -v -L 3306/tern1/3306 USERNAME@login.msi.umn.edu -N

Run that command on your computer, not an MSI computer, replacing USERNAME with your actual MSI username. If you don't have ssh installed on your computer already you would need to install it.

Then start up from Blast2GO http://www.blast2go.com/b2ghome

From the File menu select "DataAccess Settings" and set the fields to these values:

  • DB Name: b2gdb
  • DB Host: 127.0.0.1
  • DB User:blast2go
  • DB Password: blast4it

Click OK, and a window should pop up saying the new configuration was successful.

When you are finished with Blast2GO you can quit the ssh command.
