MSI's addition of an SGI Altix XE significantly increases the available computing power and introduces a unique architecture to the Institute. The 2,048 processor cores on this system are connected by a DDR Infiniband switch for large parallel calculations. This tutorial will give an overview of the queuing system and available compiling tools. It will specifically address the strengths and weaknesses of the quad-core processors and will show examples of parallel performance, as well as examples of programs that can take advantage of this computer.
