Minnesota Supercomputing Institute
With regards to the safety measures put in place by the university to mitigate the risks of the COVID-19 virus, at this time all MSI systems will remain operational and can be accessed remotely as usual. The only planned outages concern our in-person Helpdesk and tutorials. More information, as well as alternative remote support options, can be found at MSI COVID-19 Continuity Plan
This two part tutorial will first introduce you to the concept of interactive high performance computing, as distinct from batch computing. We will cover the Citrix (Windows) and NICE EnginFrame (Linux) interactive computing environments hosted by MSI. Attendees will learn how to launch virtual desktops at MSI, connect to a variety of resources, load software modules, and build complex research workflows.
The second half of this tutorial will provide attendees hands-on experience running interactive parallel jobs on the Mesabi HPC from the command line and using two popular development environments: IPython Notebooks and MATLAB. The instructors strongly encourage attendees to bring personal/work laptops for this event; software installation permissions will be required to install the remote desktop clients for Citrix and NICE.
