Project Title:
Modeling Crustal Flow Driven by Lithospheric Extension

These researchers are conducting 2D thermo-mechanical modeling that has two main areas of focus:

  • The geodynamic processes that occur during flow of continental crust (investigation of deep-crust lateral flow and ascent trajectories, rates, durations, thermal/mechanical consequences) driven by lithospheric extension, using the geodynamics modeling code Underworld.
  • Landscape evolution in response to large-changes in crust/mantle geotherms (for example, during extension and crustal thinning, with accompanying erosion). The group is using Pecube and possibly other modeling packages.
